Sea Spray,2022

Islands’ Memories

Taiwan’s people and society have increasingly estranged themselves from the sea that surrounds them. This documentary follows a group of young creative performers as they reconnect with and experience Taiwan’s ocean shorelines with their entire being. They then interpret their individual, deeply personal experiences of ocean life, evolution, and environmental change into their performance art.

Follow a ballet dancer as she feels out her footing atop cement seawalls and in the shadows of towering wind turbines. Follow dancers as they act out their bewilderment, sorrow, and anger on a factory-fringed, industry-scarred beach. On Taiwan’s largest mudflats, dancers absorb the experiences of native oysters, birds, and crabs through an Eastern philosophical lens, transforming these into naturally flowing, impromptu performances.

Sea Spray is a groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary collaborative effort between film and performing artists that explores and conveys through visual and narrative art media some of the possible trajectories in store for today’s most important environmental issues.
