Food safety is a systemic issue in Taiwan, with even the safety of rice called into question. While farmers irrigate their fields as their ancestors have done, waters no longer run clear, tainting rice crops with cadmium, chromium and other heavy metals. Hard-earned crops are ruined and the very safety of the food chain has been cast into doubt.
